Start your day by visiting Sri Lanka’s most popular travel spot and the 8th wonder of the world; the Sigiriya rock fortress. Make sure to pack a pair of comfortable walking shoes as climbing this fortress is not for the faint of the heart with its steps often cascading into the crevices of the rock. Exploring this monument and marveling at the nearby gardens and lakes, carved into the very stone is an absolute must for any trip to Sri Lanka. Don’t forget to bring your camera as the Lion Gate Paw (entrance doorway) and the artworks prescribed onto the rock, provide for some great photos. From Sigiriya, aim to reach Kandy in the late afternoon with a possible visit to a local spice garden as well, which is enroute.

Kandy was the last capital of the ancient king’s era of Sri Lanka and is now a world heritage listed city. It is world-famous for the temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha which was opened around 1595. The procession called ‘Kandy Asala Perahara’ (pageant) is held in July through to August with cultural dances and parading elephants adorned in lavish garments. The city has a relatively wetter and cooler temperature with attractions which include a museum, large shopping mall, the city lake, and the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. Kandy is also home to an abundance of luxury hotels and local restaurants to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay. Travel to Galle either early in the morning or in the afternoon after taking a morning safari at Yala. From Yala, reach Galle within five hours. Galle is referred to as the “capital of the south” with Portuguese, Dutch and British architecture influencing the design of the city. The famous Galle Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1588, expanded by the Dutch and later occupied by the British and is now a UNESCO Listed Heritage site.
